Dr. Joachim Pasel

Dr. Joachim Pasel

Head of Department Chemistry of Fuel Synthesis.

Dr. rer. nat. Joachim Pasel heads the department "Chemistry of Fuel Synthesis" and the Heterogeneous Catalysis research group at the Institute of Energy Technologies - Electrochemical Process Engineering (IET-4) at Forschungszentrum Jülich. He studied chemistry at the Ruhr University in Bochum and received his doctorate in chemistry from the University of Leipzig in 1996. He then worked as a postdoc at the University of Leipzig on projects dealing with the catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxide emissions. In 1998, Dr. Pasel moved to Forschungszentrum Jülich as a research associate and took over as head of the “Chemistry of Fuel Processing” group in 2005. Since 2020, Dr. Pasel has headed the “Chemistry of Fuel Synthesis” department at IET-4.

The focus of Dr. Pasel's scientific work is currently on the development of catalysts for the synthesis of substances for the transport sector and the chemical industry, where fossil feedstocks are no longer used. One example is the synthesis of the branched and long-chain alcohol iso-butanol from green methanol and green ethanol, which can be used as a fully-fledged gasoline component. Dr. Pasel is also working on the development of a technology for the deposition of nanoparticles on powder catalyst supports and venture building for this technology.
