Dynamic Non-Equilibrium Processes
Team Lead (interim)
About
In the Team “Dynamic Non-Equilibrium Processes”, we investigate dynamic processes that take place out of equilibrium conditions. In particular, we are interested in resolving the molecular reaction mechanisms (under near-reaction conditions). This involves recording “molecular movies”, in which experimentally atomically resolved motion pictures of the reactions are recorded, including the structural and chemical identification of the intermediate states and transition states. Since these phenomena take place on the femto- to picosecond scale, ultrafast experimental methods are required, and X-ray free-electron lasers for ultrashort X-ray pulses have recently become available. The focus is on thermocatalytic (de)hydrogenation reactions and electrochemical interfacial reactions.
Research Topics
- Investigation of ultrafast dynamic processes in thermocatalytic or electrochemical interface under non-equilibrium conditions
- Application of X-ray free-electron laser techniques for unprecedented temporal and spatial resolutions under realistic conditions
- Elucidation of dynamically evolving intermediates at transition states into atomically resolved “molecular movies”
