What happened to the SimLab Plasma Physics?
Abstract:
The SDL Plasma Physics has provided users with expertise in the optimization and implementation of computationally intensive kinetic and fluid plasma simulations since its inauguration in 2008. Its work program has covered a diverse set of research fields, including laser-generated particle and radiation sources, astrophysical plasmas and nuclear fusion. After a brief ‘sabbatical’ pause from 2022-24, the group is now back in business! I will report on some recent developments in mesh-free kinetic plasma simulation related to the JSC-hosted community code PEPC, covering both algorithmic and performance aspects. I will also discuss plans for engagement with fresh public and private initiatives in the field of fusion energy, which has received a significant boost over the past 5 years thanks to scientific and technological advances.
