IFF-News May 11, 2010

Two entries from IFF were among the eleven best pictures in the “Nano” category at the "NanoMicro+Materials from NRW 2010" photo contest. Out of 180 entries, an expert jury selected a close-up of the nano spintronics cluster tool taken by the staff photographer of Forschungszentrum Jülich, Ralf-Uwe Limbach, and a scientific simulation of magnetic vortexes in nanometre magnetic layers by the physicists Dr. Riccardo Hertel and Dr. Sebastian Gliga. Together with the Ministry of Innovation, Science, Research and Technology of the Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia, the NRW Cluster "NanoMicro+Materials" held the competition for the first time in order to draw the public's attention to the significance of nano- and microtechnology and also innovative materials and optical technologies. Angela Wenzik, science journalist at IFF, had entered the photos in the competition.

The prize winners were honoured on 4 May at a ceremony in the Ministry of Innovation, Science, Research and Technology of the Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia. On this occasion, in the presence of Dr. Michael Stückradt, State Secretary in the Innovation Ministry, an exhibition was opened showing all the winning pictures. The exhibition is open to all interested visitors from 5 to 21 May. After this period, the pictures can be viewed at the Cluster's office and will be used for publications intended to draw attention to this topic. Apart from the "Nano" category, the competition also included the categories of "Micro", "Opto", "Materials" and "Scientists at Work".
