Spectromicroscopy at the limit of few-atom thickness

Magnetic domains in the micro-flake of Fe_3GeTe_2

Similar to graphene, many layered materials can be exfoliated down a thickness of few atomic layers, with properties of such layers often dramatically different compared to the bulk.

We studied thickness dependence of the band dispersions in transition metal di-chalcogenides (TMDCs). We also studied spectroscopic signatures in the angle-resolved photomission maps from twisted TMDC layers. In collaboration with the group from RWTH Aachen we have studied magnetic phase transition in MnPS3 and FePS3 exfoliated flakes.

We are currently pursuing a program to enable spectroscopic access to single magnetic domains in various materials, including ultra-thin exfoliated layers, using micro-focused photoemission.
