PGI Seminar: Rosetta, Philae and the CometProf. Dr. Berndt Feuerbacher
Philae is the first man-made device ever to land on a comet. From 2 March 2004, the lander has accompanied the Rosetta spacecraft on its journey to the Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko and was able to successfully touch down on the comet’s surface on 12 November 2014. Physicist Berndt Feuerbacher is Philae’s scientific project initiator. Here he reports on the planning and realization of the Rosetta mission.
Berndt Feuerbacher is the former director of the Institute for Space Simulation at the DLR, the German national aeronautics and space research centre in Cologne-Porz, and professor in the department of space physics at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum. From 2008 – 2012, he was the President of the International Astronautical Federation.
