MATLAB for HPC is an in-person workshop at Jülich Supercomputing Center on running MATLAB applications effectively on HPC systems.

The workshop combines practical training with hands-on exercises and provides an opportunity to work with MATLAB experts from MathWorks and JSC. Participants are encouraged to bring their own MATLAB code and use cases for discussion during the workshop.

What You Will Learn and Gain:

Attendees will gain practical experience in running and optimising MATLAB applications on HPC systems. The workshop will cover:

  • How to submit MATLAB jobs to the HPC cluster, including hands-on submission of example jobs
  • How to tune job submissions for different workloads, including accessing GPUs on the HPC cluster
  • Techniques for optimising MATLAB applications and job submissions
  • How to troubleshoot common issues when running MATLAB jobs on HPC systems
  • Best practices for adapting and rehosting existing MATLAB code for HPC environments
  • The opportunity to work on your own MATLAB code and discuss specific use cases, questions, and challenges with experts from MathWorks and JSC

Target Audience:

The workshop is aimed at users who are interested in running computationally demanding MATLAB applications on HPC systems. It is suitable for students, doctoral researchers, postdocs, researchers, and other academic users with basic knowledge of MATLAB.

Participants who already have MATLAB code they would like to run, adapt, or optimise on the HPC cluster are particularly encouraged to attend.

Language:

The workshop is held in English.

Dates:

4 November 2026, 09:00–16:00
5 November 2026, 09:00–12:30

Venue:

Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC), building 16.4, Rotunda (room 301)

Number of Participants:

Maximum 50

If you would like to refresh your knowledge of MATLAB parallel computing before attending this workshop, MathWorks is offering a free online introductory workshop on Parallel Computing with MATLAB on October 28, 2026 (10:00–13:00 CET).

The workshop covers MATLAB parallel programming constructs, multi-core processing, GPU computing, and includes hands-on exercises. It is aimed at beginner to intermediate MATLAB users.

Workshop: Parallel Computing with MATLAB (EMEA EDU)

This workshop is optional, but may be useful as a refresher for participants who would like to strengthen their knowledge of MATLAB parallel computing before the JSC workshop.

Lead Instructor:

Dr. Mike Croucher, MathWorks

Dr. Mike Croucher is a Developer Advocate for Research and Education at MathWorks. Before joining MathWorks, he spent around 20 years working in academic research computing.

Mike works at the intersection of MATLAB, research computing, and high-performance computing, and regularly writes and presents on MATLAB, parallel computing, GPUs, and HPC. He is also the author of numerous articles on the MATLAB Blog covering topics including high-performance computing, parallel computing, GPU computing, and emerging technologies.

Teaching Assistants:

Dr. Thomas Künzel, MathWorks

Dr. Thomas Künzel is a Senior Customer Success Engineer at MathWorks and a neuroscientist by training. He supports researchers in applying MATLAB to data-intensive and computationally demanding research workflows.

Dr. Edgar Abarca Morales, MathWorks

Dr. Edgar Abarca Morales is a condensed matter physicist and Senior Customer Success Engineer at MathWorks. His work focuses on large-scale scientific and engineered systems, from computational workflows to hardware-connected applications.
