Prof. Claus M. Schneider: First UAMR Professor
November 25, 2010
The Jülich physicist Prof. Claus M. Schneider is the first holder of the UAMR professorship, recently created by the University Alliance Metropolis Ruhr (UAMR). In addition to his activities as director at the Institute of Solid State Research (IFF), Forschungszentrum Jülich, Schneider will now research and teach at the universities of Bochum (RUB), Duisburg-Essen (UDE) and TU Dortmund.
"The involvement of Prof. Schneider in these three universities shows how important collaboration is for scientists - even beyond the well-established structures," said Prof. Sebastian M. Schmidt, member of the Board of Directors of Forschungszentrum Jülich. "The appointment of Prof. Schneider has built a bridge for Forschungszentrum Jülich from nanoelectronics research in JARA-FIT to other distinguished partners in North Rhine-Westphalia."
Schneider became director of IFF-9 "Electronic Properties" in 2003. Since 2004, he has been teaching and researching as a professor at the UDE Faculty of Physics. His interests include the electronic and magnetic properties of thin-film systems and nanotechnology, as well as their suitability for applications in information technology and nanotechnology. Together with international partners, he is developing spectroscopic techniques with a high spatial resolution, as they can be used to explore the relationship between electronic structure and magnetism.
