The international workshop "Challenges for the Direct and Indirect Supply of Raw Materials for the Energy Transition" will take place on June 23–24, 2025 at ICE-2 /Jülich Systems Analysis, Forschungszentrum Jülich.

Extreme events such as the Suez Canal blockage, supply chain disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the war in Ukraine have exposed the vulnerabilities of cross-border value chains. These disruptions have heightened concerns about the feasibility of achieving ambitious transformation processes in the future.

One central area of focus is the profound transformation of the German and European energy systems — the energy transition. However, with this systemic shift comes a reshuffling of the entire raw materials landscape: How can we secure the future supply of essential primary and secondary raw materials, such as green hydrogen? And what happens if shortages arise in key intermediate products like magnets or microchips, which rely on critical raw materials? These are far from trivial questions — their answers will be crucial for the success of the energy transition.

The workshop "Challenges for the Direct and Indirect Supply of Raw Materials for the Energy Transition" aims to identify and assess a variety of risks to supply chains and to explore potential risk mitigation strategies. To this end, the event will bring together leading experts from various disciplines, including:
