Formate for renewable energy storage (FRESH)

The FRESH project focuses on the development, operation and validation of an integrated, competitive process (TRL4) for converting biogenic CO2 into potassium formate solution. The highly stable aqueous solution produced using an electrocatalytic process powered by renewable electricity can be stored safely in tanks for long periods of time before being converted back into electricity via a direct fuel cell system when needed. Potential CO2 reductions over the entire life cycle and other environmental effects are being determined by the work of ICE-2. Together with the economic analyses of IET-4, this will enable a comprehensive evaluation of the innovative process.
