The Institute ICE-3 explores the chemistry of the troposphere through atmospheric observations and simulation experiments, performs global observations, and simulates atmospheric chemistry and transport processes by numerical models.

Greenhouse gases and aerosols perturb the energy balance of the atmosphere and thus the climate system, and air pollution pose a threat to human and ecosystem health especially in industrialised countries and large cities. The mission of ICE-3 is to improve the predictability of air quality and climate by understanding the chemical transformation of emissions from anthropogenic and biogenic emissions.
The research of ICE-3 is part of Topic 1 “The atmosphere in Global Change” in the Helmoltz Programme “Changing Earth – Sustaining our Future”.
