Photochemistry and Radicals

In our research group, we investigate tropospheric photochemistry, which is responsible for the self-cleansing of the atmosphere from pollutants emitted by human activities and plants. Free radicals, which are short-lived intermediate products in the oxidation reaction chain, play a central role in the chemical transformation of pollutants, during which hazardous ozone and particles are formed. These products are not only impacting air quality and human health but are also influencing the climate.
Research Topics
We conduct measurements of trace gases and radicals and solar radiation in field campaigns on the ground, on the aircraft and the airship Zeppelin to understand air quality. In addition, we perform experiments in our large outdoor simulation chamber SAPHIR to develop and test chemical oxidation mechanisms. One focus of our research is the investigation of the emission and chemical transformation of organic compounds released by plants. With our Jülich observatory for cloud evolution (JOYCE) we aim for a better understanding of cloud formation:
