Dynamic Catalysts for LOHC-based Hydrogen Storage

Team Lead

About

Our team is working on dynamic catalysts for the loading and unloading of liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs). Suitable catalysts enable selective hydrogenation of the hydrogen‑lean species (LOHC-) and dehydrogenation of the hydrogen-rich species (LOHC+) with high productivity while preventing undesired side reactions. In order to achieve the intended multiple cycling of LOHC, the stability of the catalytic properties over many storage cycles is essential. Our work focuses on the design, development, and optimization of catalyst materials that are suitable for both hydrogenation and dehydrogenation.

Research Topics

  • Heterogeneous catalysts for loading and unloading of LOHCs
  • Application-oriented optimization of LOHC technology
  • Beneficial combinations of other technologies with LOHC processes, for example electrochemical hydrogen compression or plastic recycling
