Open Science for FZJ (OS4FZJ)

In order to create a lively, engaged open science community in Jülich that represents the importance of open science for research, structural and thematic networking of the open science protagonists and activities at the center is essential. The initiative "OS4FZJ - Further Development of Open Science at Jülich" is a joint effort by the Central Library, Jülich Supercomputing Center and Corporate Development, addressing three challenges: Campus-wide networking, publication and monitoring, and research software engineering.
The necessary institutional structure for realizing open science at Jülich - the adoption of guidelines on open access publications, research data and research software - has been in place since the beginning of 2022.

However, in order to effectively live, shape, control and monitor open science at Jülich, a new type of cooperation between open science stakeholders on campus is necessary. The three fields of action are three non-isolated building blocks in the open science field. In particular, competence in the field of RSE can only be built up and linked to RDM, for example, if the experts work together, because a person in a single organizational unit alone would be hopelessly overburdened. For similar reasons, monitoring can only create incentives if it is established on a broad scale after a development and test phase. OS4FZJ is a two-year initiative and started in October 2022.

We‘re implementing a theory driven open science practice at Jülich. This is both challenging and very exciting, as we move towards providing researchers at Jülich with a cohesive vision of how open science can benefit their scientific work as well as society at large,” says Monica Gonzalez-Marquez, who is responsible for the planning and implementation of open science activities of Jülich’s Central Library.
