Title: Sustainable and Resilient Plant Production and Land Use – Optimizing Trade-Offs and Synergies

Speaker: Frank Ewert

Affiliation: ZALF und Universität Bonn

Abstract:

Agriculture faces enormous challenges related to climate change, loss of biodiversity, degradation of natural resources, market volatilities, conflicts and pandemics among others. Addressing these challenges requires a comprehensive system perspective considering agricultural including plant production as part of the larger agri-food system and bioeconomy. The development towards sustainable and resilient cropping systems and land use demands understanding and optimization of trade-offs and synergies among multiple goals at different scales. A comprehensive approach for arable cropping is largely lacking and therefore addressed in this presentation. Promising pathways towards more sustainable and resilient arable cropping systems are presented and discussed from the agri-food and bioeconomic system(s) perspective concluding with a set of recommendations to support respective transformation.
