Promising Start for Measurements at POLI

The polarized single crystal diffractometer POLI at the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum (MLZ) in Garching is designed to investigate complex magnetic structures in single crystals using spin polarized neutrons. After more than three years of design and construction work, POLI is now able to operate separately from its mother instrument, HEiDi. Now both single crystal diffractometers are capable of performing independent measurements using hot neutrons. POLI is operated by RWTH Aachen on behalf of the Jülich Centre for Neutron Science (JCNS) and financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
For the first time, POLI has seen neutrons at its new beam line. The first test results look very promising. Already at this early stage it seems clear that POLI has the potential to become one of the most powerful and versatile single crystal diffractometers in the world, enabling faster measuring times and the collection of better data. It is expected that the first users will be invited to start their experiments at the instrument in the autumn.
