The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation presents approximately 20 Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Awards annually to internationally renowned academics from abroad in recognition of their outstanding accomplishments in research. Nominees must have received their doctoral degree within the last 18 years. Nominations may also be initiated by award winners of the Humboldt Foundation working abroad, provided that the nomination is made jointly with a colleague working in Germany.

Award money: € 45.000
Award winners are also invited to conduct research projects of their choice in Germany – i.e. at Forschungszentrum Jülich.

Length of research stay: 6–12 months (can be split)

Nominations: Nominations can be submitted online at any time.

Review process: The review process takes about six months.

The independent body that selects the award winners is comprised of around 22 academics of all disciplines. It meets twice a year (March and October) to discuss nominations received.

Please note: Before proposing a suitable candidate from a non-EU country (or countries deemed equivalent to the EU), an assessment must be performed under foreign trade legislation. To perform this assessment, please use the checklist in the form management system (FMS) under Law and Patents – Checklist for employees from non-EU countries/countries deemed equivalent to the EU.
