Short-Term Scholarships for Graduates, Doctoral Researchers, and Postdocs to Participate in JSPS Summer Program in Japan – DAAD

The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) programme aims to provide German graduates, doctoral researchers, and postdocs with a direct insight into the Japanese cultural and scientific landscape in order to gain early experiences in the Japanese research environment. At the same time, this research stay at Japanese universities and selected research institutes offers an excellent opportunity to systematically introduce young German scientists to cutting-edge Japanese research and future collaborations with Japan.

Target group

  • Advanced graduates in master’s courses who are aiming to complete doctoral degrees

  • Doctoral researchers

  • Postdocs (who have completed their doctorate no later than 1 April in the year of application and within the last six years)

Type of funding

Two-month research stays between mid-June and mid-August, divided into two parts:

  • One-week intensive induction course into Japanese language, culture, and science policy

  • Research stay at a selected research institute (https://www.jsps.go.jp/english/e-summer/index7.html). The list is intended to establish the required contacts prior to the research stay.

JSPS short-term scholarships

  • International outbound and return flights

  • Scholarship rate of ¥ 534,000 (approx. € 4,100)

  • Health and accident insurance

Selection procedure

DAAD submits nominations to JSPS, which decides on the funding of proposed research stays in Japan.
