Research Stays in Japan with the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship

The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) offers highly-qualified doctoral researchers and postdocs from Germany the opportunity to complete research stays in Japan in cooperation with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH).

DAAD/JSPS Research Fellowship for doctoral researchers and postdocs

  • Duration of funding: 1–12 months (doctoral researchers), 1–6 months (postdocs).
  • Benefits: return flight, monthly scholarship instalment (approx. 200,000 yen for doctoral candidates, approx. 362,000 yen for postdocs), travel health insurance, start-up allowance for stays of three months or more.
  • Next application deadlines:
    • July 31, 2025 for fellowships starting between April 1, 2026 and June 30, 2026
    • October 31, 2025 for fellowships starting between July 1, 2026 und September 30, 2026

AvH/JSPS Research Fellowship for Postdocs

  • Funding lines: Short-term Fellowships (1–12 months) and Standard Fellowships (12–24 months).
  • Selection process: Applicants for fellowships of six months or more are selected by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH). The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is responsible for shorter stays under the Short-Term Programme.
  • Benefits: Monthly scholarship instalment (approx. 362,000 yen), starting allowance from three months, as well as contributions to travel and health insurance costs. Further benefits are possible.
  • Application: Possible at any time, the selection committee meets in February, June and October.
