ONLINE -- MSA-Seminar: Hydrologic Modeling on GPUs with ParFlow – Leveraging Accelerator Architectures with Modern Techniques
Modular Supercomputing Architectures Seminar
Referent: Jaro Hokkanen, IBG-3, Forschungszentrum Jülich
Rapidly changing heterogeneous supercomputer architectures pose a great challenge to many scientific communities trying to leverage the latest technology in high-performance computing. In order to adapt to modern accelerator architectures, many projects rely on directive-based programming models or build the codebase tightly around a third-party domain-specific language or library. Neither approach is trouble-free, e.g., reduced codebase maintainability or high reliance on a single third-party framework may be problematic in the long-term.
These issues can be tackled using a lightweight application-side abstraction layer for compute kernels and memory management resulting in a versatile and inexpensive adaptation of new accelerator architectures with little drawbacks. The implementation for accelerator architectures in ParFlow hydrologic model demonstrates that a significant performance gain, high developer productivity, and minimally invasive implementation are all achievable at the same time while keeping the codebase well maintainable in the long-term.
