Obituary for Dr. Tapan Chatterji

17 April 2025

It is with immense sadness that we have learnt of the passing of Dr. Tapan Chatterji, a highly respected condensed matter physicist, a former guest scientist and a close friend of JCNS, on 11 April, at the age of 82.

Tapan joined ILL more than thirty years ago and retired in 2007. After his retirement from ILL, Tapan joined JCNS as a guest scientist for a couple of years. This had allowed him to continue with his scientific research at the Grenoble, Jülich and Garching sites of the JCNS institute. During this period, Tapan was a frequent user at MLZ in Garching, and he had also developed close scientific collaborations with the JCNS scientists.

Tapan will be remembered for his outstanding scientific achievements, undeniable sense of humour, and his warmth and generosity towards his colleagues and in particular to young scientists. We offer our deepest condolences to his family.
