Integrated Scenarios

Integrated Scenarios

The Integrated Scenarios department develops applications for the holistically optimized design and transformation of energy systems. The systems range from individual buildings and communities to international systems and cover the entire supply chain from generation to demand. Their bottom-up modeling is complex, which is why various methods for model coupling, systematic complexity reduction and the integration of mainframe computers are being developed. Furthermore, the decision-making process regarding investments and regulations in energy systems is supported with the help of new visualization techniques and graphical user interfaces.

Research Teams

Energy Systems Transformation

The Energy Systems Transformation team develops holistic transformation strategies in order to provide a solid decision-making basis for politics and industry for a greenhouse gas-neutral energy supply by 2045 and beyond.

More
Regional Energy Systems

The Regional Energy Systems team analyzes and evaluates transformation pathways for regional energy systems from individual consumers (buildings, industrial sites) to districts, cities and counties.

More
Methodology Lab

The Methodology Lab team develops methods for integration of diverse, often non-linear, system aspects such as learning effects, resource requirements or social acceptance, as well as for reducing complexity .

Specialized Groups

Research Data Management

The Research Data Management specialist group develops methods that improve the findability, accessibility, interoperability and reusability of research software and data in energy system research in line with the FAIR principles. This includes the development of special metadata formats, integrating model interfaces, approaches to data integration, validation and evaluation in model workflows, artificial intelligence methods for data procurement and ontologies as a common language basis. In addition, selected models and data from the institute are made available to potentially interested parties via graphical user interfaces.

Scientific Computing

The complex model calculations of system analysis require an extensive hardware and software infrastructure, which is developed, supported and integrated by the Scientific Computing specialist group. Hardware and software requirements are defined, and sustainable processes and software architectures are developed, designed and implemented to enable model developers to efficiently use and collaboratively develop models.
