Brain and Behaviour (INM-7)

To exploit the immense potential of AI responsibly, expertise is required at numerous levels. At our institute, solutions are developed in various groups and interlinked in interdisciplinary projects. The INM-7 is an “AI all-rounder”.

We develop and apply novel methods for mapping the regional organization of the human brain into cortical areas as well as the topography of large-scale, distributed networks recruited by cognitive, socio-affective or sensorimotor tasks.

We characterize the variability of brain structure, function and connectivity in large cohorts and their relation to age, gender and behavioral measurements. Using machine-learning approaches we train predictive models for inference on phenotypical characteristics of new, individual subjects from brain imaging data.

We implement and evaluate novel machine-learning approaches for improved diagnosis, stratification and outcome prediction at the level of individual patients based on neuroimaging and wearable technology.

An important focus of our work is to provide the developed tools and results to the scientific public through free software-tools and open data sets to encourage broad use. We are also involved in numerous initiatives such as the Human Brain Project, VirtualBrainCloud, IRTG2150, SFB and BrainMap.

Currently, artificial intelligence methods for automated prediction of neuropsychological and clinical characteristics of individual humans are still in the stage of development and validation worldwide. However, it can be assumed that in the foreseeable future they will reach a level that will allow initial applications in medical and non-medical (courts, assessments, personnel selection) practice. INM-7 is therefore already addressing the practical, societal, and ethical implications of such applications.
