Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Science

Our Commitment to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI)

At Forschungszentrum Jülich, we understand scientific excellence not only as the result of individual achievements, but as the product of diverse perspectives, equitable participation, and inclusive structures. Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are not add-ons for us, but central elements that drive scientific progress.

We promote diversity from the very start of a scientific career: whether international researchers, different educational backgrounds, or diverse life realities – we are committed to equal opportunities for all. After all, it is only through a variety of perspectives that innovative research and societally relevant solutions can emerge.

Our Mission

Our Output

We make research diverse – by purposefully integrating gender and diversity aspects. In doing so, we enhance the quality and impact of scientific results.

How We Make It Happen?

We support early-career researchers in:

  • to be aware of and seize all opportunities for a successful scientific career
  • to plan their projects, teams, and collaborations in an inclusive and responsible way
  • to design their research approaches and third-party funding proposals with sensitivity to diversity

We advise PIs and organizational units on:

  • the development or analysis of DEI programs and diversity-sensitive structures & processes
  • the preparation of funding applications
  • guidelines for recruitment procedures and promotion criteria
  • the integration of gender and diversity aspects into research designs

We don’t just provide advice, we also offer training to enable you to actively contribute to organizational change towards a more diverse and equitable scientific community.

What does DEI mean in science?

DIVERSITY

EQUITY

INCLUSION

Different perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences enrich scientific work.

All researchers are provided with fair conditions to realize their potential.

We foster a work environment where everyone is heard and included – regardless of gender, origin, age, disability, or social status.

Excellent science is rarely the achievement of individuals alone. Studies show that the best research emerges from the interplay of diverse experiences and perspectives.

Scientific excellence emerges in an environment that values and promotes diversity. At Forschungszentrum Jülich, DEI is therefore an integral part of our excellence strategy. By including different perspectives and experiences, scientific breakthroughs become possible. That is why we create structures that enable creative minds from all over the world to contribute and grow.

We aim to attract people to Jülich who enrich our research through unconventional ways of thinking. DEI is thus an essential element of our excellence strategy – from recruitment to long-term career development.
