Purpose, requirements and duration

The purpose of a doctoral contract is to provide doctoral researchers with reliable framework conditions, allowing them to concentrate fully on their doctoral thesis. This paves the way for creative, independent research achievements of an excellent standard.

All doctoral researchers who have a doctoral contract with Jülich are assigned a doctoral supervisor as well as a scientific supervisor. In addition to this specialized supervision, the actual processes are monitored by the Doctoral Committee.

At Forschungszentrum Jülich, three years (36 months) is the target for completion of a doctoral degree: from the beginning of the doctoral project until submission of the doctoral thesis to the university. During this time, the doctoral researchers can concentrate fully on their doctoral degree and thus complete it in good time. This three-year period can only be extended in exceptional circumstances.
