Science and Research

Forschungszentrum Jülich focuses on use-inspired basic research. Its work spans a range of topics and disciplines and aims to investigate the relationships between the research fields of energy, information, and the bioeconomy.

Use-inspired basic research

Energy

The scientific objective of energy research is an energy system based on renewable energy which will help make the transformation of the energy sector a success as well as limiting climate change. The contributions to research and development made by the Institute of Energy and Climate Research (IEK) include energy conversion methods and energy storage technologies as well as the mechanisms of climate change.

Information and the Brain

Scientists in the research area of information investigate how information is processed in biological and technical systems. The focus here is on brain research, basic research for future information technologies, and supercomputing.

Bioeconomy

As the global population increases, agricultural land recedes, and fossil fuel resources are on the decline, there is a need to transition from an oil-based economy to one based on the sustainable use of renewable resources. It is in this respect that the bioeconomy – a bio-based economy built on the sustainable use of natural material cycles – can make some key contributions.

Research infrastructures

Wissenschaft und Forschung

Scientists at Forschungszentrum Jülich have access to extensive, highly specialized research infrastructures. Some of these, such as the supercomputers or the neutron scattering instruments, are used by teams of scientists from all over the world – experts at Forschungszentrum Jülich provide them with professional advice and support. Some of the infrastructures listed are scientific institutes of Forschungszentrum Jülich.
