The road to Exascale: How algorithmic re-engineering can help break the power and performance brick walls

Speakers:

Costas Bekas & Alessandro Curioni, IBM Zurich Research Laboratory

Abstract:

The goal of Exascale performance has stretched traditional HPC practices, both in H/W and S/W to their limits. The HPC community is starting to realize that a radically new way of thinking is required if we are to continue to see historic performance trends. We argue that focusing on the algorithmic level holds great promise. Reduced complexity, but more importantly, the emergence of new S/W characteristics are bound to hugely influence design decisions for next generation computing systems. We will show how algorithmic re-engineering can open the way for combined several orders of magnitude performance gains in power consumption and time to solution.

This talk is part of the annual JSC Guest Student Colloquium.
Anyone interested is cordially invited to participate.
