Jülich Storage Cluster
The Jülich Storage Cluster (JUST) is a versatile storage infrastructure operated by the Jülich Supercomputing Centre at Forschungszentrum Jülich. The system provides high-performance and high-capacity storage resources for the supercomputer facility. Recently, additional storage and management services, addressing demands beyond the high-performance computing area, have been added. In support of its mission, JUST consists of multiple storage tiers with different performance and functional characteristics to cover the entire data lifecycle.
All file systems provided by JUST base on IBM Spectrum Scale (formerly GPFS) - a highly scalable parallel file system technology.
The HPC-focused file systems reside on so called building blocks, where two servers are connected to 4 or 6 JBODS with harddisks which are managed by the GPFS Native RAID extension from Spectrum Scale. Thereby it uses the declustered RAID technology to deliver not only outstanding throughput, but also extreme data integrity, faster rebuild times, and enhanced data protection.
Beside the supercomputing systems (JUWELS, JURECA and JUSUF) several dedicated cluster systems and the data transfer system JUDAC have access to the storage realized by remote GPFS cluster mounts. Only for projects with special requirements we export dedicated directories by NFS using the GPFS Cluster Export Service (CES) functionality.
The JUST storage system offers a nominal peak I/O bandwidth of 380 GB/s.
The lowest storage layer and the backup of user data is stored on tape technology.
Please see the JSC Service Status Page for status information about the different file systems and related services.
