Harry Vereecken elected to the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina

We warmly congratulate Prof. Dr. Harry Vereecken, Director of IBG-3 until 2025, on his election to the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. On April 15, 2026, he became a member to the Section “Agricultural and Nutritional Sciences.”
Harry Vereecken is internationally recognized as a leading scientist in soil, water, and environmental research. His work focuses on understanding the impacts of climate change and land-use change on terrestrial ecosystems. He investigates the interactions between soils, water resources, vegetation, and the atmosphere, and how these interactions drive system responses across a wide range of spatial and temporal scales.
His research interests include soil hydrology, the sustainable management of agroecosystems, the modeling of water and matter fluxes, digital soil mapping, and the development of methods for monitoring and predicting environmental change. His work contributes significantly to more sustainable agriculture, improved water resource protection, and a better understanding of environmental challenges such as droughts and floods.
Election to the Leopoldina recognizes Harry Vereecken’s outstanding scientific achievements and his long-standing contributions to international environmental and agricultural research.
