The sustainable use of the natural resources soil, water and atmosphere.
Climate change and land use change have significant impacts on terrestrial ecosystems that society will need to manage in the coming decades. However, the development of appropriate management and adaptation strategies to global change is currently severely hampered by our limited ability to predict states and fluxes of matter in terrestrial systems at the temporally and spatially relevant scales. Contributing to the improvement of system understanding and predictive capacity is the central research concern of the Agrosphere Institute.
Prof. Dr. Andrea Schnepf leitet die Forschungsgruppe „Soil-, Root Systems and Rhizosphere Processes“ am Institut für Bio- und Geowissenschaften – Agrosphäre (IBG-3) des Forschungszentrums Jülich und ist Professorin an der Universität Bonn.
Happily sharing our latest work published in 🌾 A study from our members at @agrosphere-ibg-3.bsky.social found that thermal neutrons from Cosmic-ray neutron sensors correlates well with several parameter on plants and it is crop specific. The sensors is found to have potential in supporting eddy covariance stations.
Soils ensure food security and biodiversity. However, climate change is putting them under increasing pressure. On World Soil Day on 5 December, we present Jülich research on sustainable land use, climate-resilient agriculture, and global food security.
This is how the transfer of scientific findings into a broad application succeeds - an online tool that is freely accessible to everyone provides information about the current and future water balance of our soils.
TERENO was founded over 15 years ago - the most comprehensive research project to investigate the long-term regional impacts of climate change on terrestrial ecosystems and their socio-economic consequences in Germany.
