PGI-1/IAS-1 Researcher Selected as APS “Outstanding Referee”
26 March 2015
Dr. Gustav Bihlmayer from the Institute “Quantum Theory of Materials” (PGI-1/IAS-1) has been selected as one of the outstanding referees of 2015 by the American Physical Society (APS). Since 2008, the organization has awarded the title of “Outstanding Referee” each year to around 150 active scientific referees to acknowledge their exceptional work in evaluating the manuscripts for the society’s scientific journals. In previous years, three other members of PGI-1/IAS-1 were awarded this title; in 2013 Dr. Bo N. J. Persson, in 2012 Dr. Ansgar Liebsch and in 2011 Dr. Robert O. Jones.
Institute Director Prof. Stefan Blügel welcomed the news as confirmation of the high level of international recognition of the competency and service to the physics community of the research scientists in his team. The “peer review process”, as it is known, serves as a quality control mechanism in science and is meant to guarantee that only research results that are novel, reliable and relevant are published. To this end, independent experts assess the results that other scientists in their area of expertise aim to publish, usually anonymously and unpaid. In the course of the last 30 years, more than 65,000 reviewers have been actively supporting the APS.
