Child Benefit

Child benefit is a social welfare payment to the parents or guardians of children. How much is paid depends on the number of children and their ages?

Who is entitled to child benefit?

According to the German Income Tax Act, child benefit is payable for all children until the age of 18. Child benefit can be extended until the child‘s 25th birthday if specific prerequisites are met.

In accordance with the Income Tax Act, German citizens receive child benefits if their place of residence or the place where they usually live is located in Germany. Foreign nationals living in Germany can receive child benefit if they have a valid residence permit.

How much monthly child benefit can I expect to receive?

Where can I apply for child benefit?

You must apply to your local Family Benefits Office (Familienkasse) for child benefit. The Federal Employment Agency (Agentur für Arbeit) is usually where the Family Benefits Office can be found. You should apply at the office in the district where you usually live or reside. If your place of residence is abroad, but you work in Germany, then you should file your application with the Family Benefits Office in the district where your employer‘s payroll unit is located.

You must use the correct form when applying for child benefit. The Family Benefits Office can provide you with a copy or you can download it online.
