The division consists of three algorithms, tools and methods laboratories (ATML), a research group (RG) and the education team. The AMTLs on “Numerical and statistical methods”, “Advanced time integrators”, and “Concurrency and Parallelism” deal with mathematical modelling, the development and improvement of numerical algorithms as well as their cutting-edge implementation and optimization on HPC systems. The RG “Research Software Engineering for HPC” works on software engineering principles for HPC codes (with a strong focus on mathematical software) and is at the heart of the Jülich-wide JuRSE Community of Practice. The education team is responsible for the organization and realization of the IHK apprenticeship "Mathematisch-Technische/r Softwareentwickler/in" (MaTSE) in combination with the integrated Bachelor's degree program "Angewandte Mathematik und Informatik" (AMI) at Fachhochschule Aachen Campus Jülich (FH Aachen). Together with FH Aachen, the division also conducts the consecutive AMI Master's course.

Research Topics

RG Research Software Engineering for HPC (RSE)

This research group focuses on Research Software Engineering (RSE) for high-performance computing (HPC) software and their developers.

ATML Advanced Time Integrators

This ATML focusses primarily on the design, analysis, implementation and optimization of advanced time integrators (ATI) and space-time multilevel methods for extreme scale HPC systems.

ATML Numerical and Statistical Methods

ATML group members develop, implement, parallelize, test, and support new numerical and statistical methods to solve eigenvalue problems as well as partial differential equations.

ATML Concurrency and Parallelism

The focus of the ATML Concurrency and Parallelism lays on the long-term development of a C++ Fast Multipole library (FMsolvr) and a fine-grained tasking library (Eventify) as well as CI for HPC.

Education

MaTSE Vocational Training and Bachelor Course Applied Mathematics and Computer Science

At JSC, students can be trained to be mathematical-technical software developers and simultaneously take the bachelor study course „Applied Mathematics and Computer Science“.

Master Course Applied Mathematics and Computer Science

The master course is arranged in cooperation with the University of Applied Sciences Aachen. The course of studies has as goal the independent mathematical modeling and simulation of scientific and technical processes.

Guest student programme on Scientific Computing

Each summer, JSC organizes a ten-week guest student programme on scientific computing.

Cooperations

Members of the division represent JSC on the board of executive directors of the Joint Laboratory for Extreme Scale Computing (JLESC). A team of local WHPC members has established a local WHPC Chapter at Forschungszentrum Jülich, the Jülich Network of Women in HPC (JuWinHPC).

Mathematical and Scientific Application Software

JSC provides a huge variety of scientific application software. Parallelized packages and libraries are installed on JSCs supercomputers, while serial applications and typical desktop environments are provided on local workstations.
