Fast Methods for Long-Range Interactions in Complex Systems
Summer School, 6-10 September 2010, Jülich Supercomputing Centre, Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany
Scope
Parallel computing and computer simulations of complex particle systems including charges have an ever increasing impact in a broad range of fields in the physical sciences, e.g. in astrophysics, statistical physics, plasma physics, material sciences, physical chemistry and biophysics. During the summer school, which is funded by the German Heraeus-Foundation, various methods and algorithms are introduced and presented which aim to reduce the computational complexity of the evaluation of long-range interactions which tend to dominate these types of simulation, e.g. the Fast Multipole Method, Barnes-Hut Tree Method, Multigrid or FFT based methods. Parallelization of these methods will be shown and discussed in detail.
In a morning session there will be talks and tutorials on fast algorithms and methods for Coulomb solvers. In the afternoon session there will be hands-on training courses for different methods and applications. Early on there will be also an introduction to parallel programming and computing.
The school is aimed at PhD students and postdocs working in fields of computational science, in particular physics, computational chemistry or numerical mathematics who want to learn about modern methods and algorithms for the evaluation of long range interactions, or who want to apply these techniques in their own simulation codes.
