Scope

Parallel computing and computer simulations of complex particle systems including charges have an ever increasing impact in a broad range of fields in the physical sciences, e.g. in astrophysics, statistical physics, plasma physics, material sciences, physical chemistry and biophysics. During the summer school, which is part of the CECAM Jülich Node activities, various methods and algorithms are introduced and presented which aim to reduce the computational complexity of the evaluation of long-range interactions which tend to dominate these types of simulation, e.g. the Fast Multipole Method, Barnes-Hut Tree Method, Multigrid or FFT based methods. Parallelization of these methods will be shown and discussed in detail.

In a morning session there will be talks and tutorials on fast algorithms and methods for Coulomb solvers. In the afternoon session there will be hands-on training courses for different methods and applications. Early on there will be also an introduction to parallel programming and computing.

The school is aimed at PhD students and postdocs working in fields of computational science, in particular physics, computational chemistry or numerical mathematics who want to learn about modern methods and algorithms for the evaluation of long range interactions, or who want to apply these techniques in their own simulation codes.

Application

The number of participants is limited to 40. Interested young scientists should send an application in electronic form (pdf format) to jsc-cecam@fz-juelich.de

The application should include
- a short CV including list of publications
- a short description of work or scientific interests
- one page of abstract, if a poster is presented

We are expecting a heavy overload of applicants and there will be a selection based on the application form (no "first serve"). Therefore the deadline is strict and we apologize in advance for disappointing the people who are not selected.

There will be no fee for the school. Course material, accommodation, lunch and social events will be covered by Jülich CECAM Node.

Accommodation is in two-bed rooms at the Gästehaus of Forschungzentrum Jülich or the Stadt Hotel Jülich.

Deadline for application: 15 August 2011
