Every week on Thursdays from 3 to about 4 p.m., colleagues from Forschungszentrum Jülich present their work in a video conference. Short films and photos complement the format. Questions from the participants and a lively exchange are clearly encouraged.

On Thursday, July 8, the lecture will be devoted to a very current topic. Dr. Jan Meinke from the Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) will give an insight into how the mathematical modeling and simulation of epidemics is done. Using the current COVID-19 pandemic as an example, the idea of mathematical epidemiology will be introduced and how forecasts and scenarios can be generated will be explained. Among other things, the naturally incomplete data situation and the resulting challenges for modeling will be discussed. In particular, the often discussed dark figure will be addressed.
