GCS Industry Day 2025 – Supercomputing and AI Are Driving Innovation in Companies

High-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) can accelerate innovation processes and strengthen the competitiveness of businesses. While some companies have been using these technologies for years, for many others, this is still uncharted territory.

Bringing these digital future technologies closer to companies was the stated goal of the GCS Industry Day held on May 6, 2025, at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC). The event showcased how companies can benefit from JSC’s powerful infrastructure, its extensive expertise, and the latest funded projects in the fields of HPC and AI.

The event was organized by JSC in cooperation with the Gauss Centre for Supercomputing (GCS) and the chambers of industry and commerce (CCI) of the Rhineland region: Aachen, Cologne and Mittlerer Niederrhein.

Real-World Use Cases and Engaging Discussions

At the heart of the event were presentations highlighting concrete business use cases. Representatives from Görtzen Stolbrink & Partner mbB, FEV Group GmbH, and IANUS Simulation GmbH shared first-hand experiences of using supercomputers and AI in their work. These included simulations of fire spread and evacuation movements used in building planning to ensure fire safety, as well as AI-assisted optimisations based on flow simulations for product development and manufacturing.

A particular highlight of the event was the lively exchange between scientists and company representatives – during the moderated panel discussion, in discussion groups following the presentations, and in informal networking conversations. These interactions fostered mutual understanding and laid the foundation for future collaborations.

To conclude the event, participants were invited to take guided tours of the JSC, gaining direct insights into Jülich’s HPC infrastructure.

Lowering Barriers for Businesses to enter HPC

With its cutting-edge infrastructure and broad expertise, JSC offers optimal conditions for businesses to gain initial experience with HPC through low-threshold access. JSC’s Industry Relations Team has been supporting businesses in getting started with supercomputing for over ten years.

Since 2022, the WestAI Service Center, in which the JSC is a key partner, has been offering extensive and funded services specifically focused on artificial intelligence – including access to computing resources and expert consultation.

By fall 2025, the JUPITER AI Factory in Jülich will become a central pillar of Europe’s AI infrastructure. Start-ups, SMEs, and large companies will gain access to Europe’s first exascale-class supercomputer, JUPITER, for AI training purposes.

Collaboration Between Industry and Research Holds Great Potential

The GCS Industry Day 2025 impressively highlighted the central role that supercomputing and AI play for national companies and demonstrated how bridges between research and companies can be built successfully.

Previous collaborations between JSC and companies have primarily focused on industrial applications of HPC and AI. However, discussions at the event made clear that other sectors – for instance logistics and the service industry – could also benefit from such partnerships in the future.

The panel’s closing message was a clear call to action: HPC and AI offer tangible benefits for many businesses.

Take the first step – be courageous!
