Virtual machines and block devices are not part of any automated backup procedures. There are several reasons for this, among them is the fact that the data payload, the data as seen within your VM, is easier and more space efficient to backup than entire block devices. Moreover, an uncoordinated backup of used filesystems may lead to a false perception of the security of the data.
