Biohybrid Synapses for Interactive Neuronal Networks

ERC project BRAIN-ACT aims to develop the next generation of interactive biohybrid platforms where biological neuronal cells interface 3D neuromorphic devices resembling the shape and functionalities of dendritic synapses.

The project is focused on engineering a dynamic polymer-based neuromorphic device with 3D vertical structures resembling the shape of neuronal dendritic spines. Furthermore, surface functionalization strategies will be established to engineer the neuromorphic devices with biological synaptic features. The so-obtained biomimetic artificial neuron will be able to respond to biological neuronal firing as action potentials might modulate the electrical state of the device inducing a long-term potentiation and mechanical reshaping of the 3D artificial dendrites. In this way, BRAIN-ACT aims to engineer bioelectronics platforms that “looks like neurons and behaves like neurons” and as such could support on demand the physiological activity of biological neurons.
