Seminar of the PGI-8 / ICS-8:

Title: Electron and Ion Microscopy to Bridge Materials, Biology and Medicine

Speaker: Dr. Sergio Bertazzo (Imperial College, London)

Date: 25 November 2013 Time: 13:00

Venue: building 2.4w, seminar room 309b

In my talk, I will discuss the great advantages of using a Focused Ion Beam to prepare samples for Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and how this method can give rise to novel ways of studying tissues and cells. Also, using Scanning Ion Microscopy (SIM), I will demonstrate how we may successfully obtain SEM-like images without affecting the fluorescence signal from fluorescent-tagged proteins. These new methods allow the fluorescence signal to remain stable over several cycles of fluorescence and ion imaging, and also make it possible to brand landmarks with nanoscale resolution. Finally, I will discuss how using new methods of sample preparation it is possible to image the ultra-structure of tissues and cells in any systems.
