Improved representation of volcanic SO2 depletion: the Ambae eruption in July 2018

Abstract:

The SO2 in atmosphere has a big lifetime variability depending on whether clouds presents. We improved the volcanic SO2 transport by implementing more realistic physical and chemical process representations in the Lagrangian transport model Massive-Parallel Trajectory Calculations (MPTRAC), including the OH/H2O2 chemistry, wet deposition and convection module. On a case study of the Ambae eruption in July 2018, a series of sensitivity tests were conducted to access the dependencies of SO2 lifetime on the complex atmospheric conditions. The refinements on the transport decay modeling also require improvement on inverse modeling techniques to reconstruct the initial injections.
