Chemistry modeling in Lagrangian particle dispersion model MPTRAC

Abstract:

The modeling of chemical processes has an important impact on modeling of trace gas sink and source estimation. The Lagrangian dispersion model MPTRAC has implemented two chemistry solutions. The first uses the exponential decay to model the first-order chemical reaction, which is suitable for the long-lived tracer gases that are mostly controlled by photolysis reactions. The second solution uses the Kinetic Preprocessor (KPP) package to solve the high-order reactions with an implicit integrator. This solution is tested with case study of volcanic SO2 dispersion, the Raikoke eruption in 2019. Atmospheric chemistry strongly affects the trace gas lifetime and mass distribution in altitude, which is consider to be an important factor in the source estimation of pollutants.
