The latest findings from research with neutrons in the areas of magnetism and correlated electron systems, new instruments and materials, as well as sample preparation were the focus of attention at the JCNS Workshop 2010 "Trends and Perspectives in Neutron Scattering: Magnetism and Correlated Electron Systems". The workshop took place at the small village of Bernried at Lake Starnberg in the vicinity of Munich, Germany, from 4 to 7 October. 80 scientists from Europe, the USA, Japan, China and Australia participated in this event, which was organized by the Jülich Centre for Neutron Science (JCNS).

The agenda covered a range of topics from frustrated magnets, quantum and low-dimensional magnetism, through magnetocalorics, pnictides and multiferroics up to heavy fermions.

"Neutrons are unique and indispensable probes in the investigation of magnetism and correlated electron systems in solid state physics," said Prof. Thomas Brückel, head of the Institute for Scattering Methods at IFF, in his welcome address at the international workshop. The lecturers laid special emphasis on the importance of collaborative efforts in crystal growth, improving instrumentation and data analysis. A visit to the FRM II facility in Garching rounded the workshop off, giving the participants a fresh view on the state of the art of instrumentation and research capabilities.

The workshop was supported by the companies EADS Astrium, Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum, Pfeiffer Vacuum and SwissNeutronics.
