Research

Here are some of our current research areas at JCNS-2:

Magnetic nanoparticles

Magnetic nanoparticles are currently in the focus of intense research activities. This is not only due to their use in practical applications e.g. as theranostic agents in medicine or as ferrofluids in engineering technologies, but also due to their role as fundamental model systems for nanoscale phenomena.

Quantum Materials

Quantum materials are those where reduced dimensionality, quantum coherence, the topology of wavefunctions, quantum fluctuations, electron-electron interactions, and spin-orbit coupling plays a crucial role. Such quantum materials include superconductors, graphene, topological insulators, Weyl semimetals, quantum spin liquids, and spin ices, to name a few.

Multifunctional Materials

Magnetic and electric degrees of freedom are both employed in information technology and other applications. Their combination and coupling in a “multiferroic” offers potential for improvements, for example in form of magnetic memories writable by magnetoelectric coupling. 

Superconductivity and correlated electrons

Strongly correlated electron systems are those where strong electron-electron correlations play a major role in determining the ground state electronic and magnetic properties of the solid. Unconventional superconductors including recently discovered Fe-pnictides, heavy Fermion superconductors, and multiferroics are  a few classic examples of strongly correlated electron systems.

Thin film heterostructures for spintronics

Spintronics is a field of electronics in which not only the charge but also the spin of the electron is used for information storage and transport. Coupling magnetism with different types of order in thin film heterostructures allows new phases to develop at the interfaces and more efficient control of the functionalities.

Instruments for ESS

The ESS is a next-generation European neutron research facility in Lund, Sweden; our department “ESS Instrumentation” designs concepts for neutron scattering instruments there. Read more on the JCNS website.
