First JUQUEEN Porting and Tuning Workshop (PATC course)
First JUQUEEN Porting and Tuning Workshop (PATC course)
Workshop, 4-6 February 2013, Jülich Supercomputing Centre, Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany
Start
4th February 2013 08:00 AM
End
6th February 2013 04:00 PM
Location
Jülich Superomputing Centre, lecture room no. 021
The commissioning of the new Blue Gene/Q petaflop supercomputer JUQUEEN marks another quantum leap in supercomputer performance at JSC. At the same time, it is recognized that special efforts by the users are necessary in order to get the most out of this unique research tool.
The aim of this hands-on workshop is to support current users of JUQUEEN in porting their software, in analyzing its performance, and in improving its efficiency.
It is highly recommended that project PIs send at least one expert on their code to this workshop.
Prerequisites
Participants should belong to a currently active simulation project on JUQUEEN (project-ID!) and should already have an active user account (user-id!). Test runs during the workshop will be done on the participants' own project accounts.
In order to gain maximum benefit from this workshop, participant should have an in-depth (hands-on) knowledge of the algorithms and codes used in their project.
Participants of the First JUQUEEN Porting and Tuning Workshop
Agenda
Day 1, morning: Overview Presentations
Day 1 afternoon and following days
Work on own application: porting, analysis, and optimization
Support by experts:
Performance Tools
IBM-staff
Simulation Labs
JSC application support
Talks and Breakout-Sessions
special topics
problems of particular scientific fields (depending on audience; e.g. QCD, fluid dynamics, plasma physics)
Registrations are only considered until 14 January 2013.
Note that in the application form we ask some information about your project and code in order to better plan the workshop program. This workshop is a Prace Advanced Training Centres course. The application form is provided on the PRACE website.
Due to available space, the maximal number of participants is limited. Participants will be notified until January 18.
Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) Institute for Advanced Simulation (IAS) Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH D-52425 Jülich, Germany
Agenda
All talks will be in the Lecture Room (building 16.3, room 006). The hands-on sessions will take place in the Computer Labs (building 16.3, room 021 and 004, and building 16.4, room 204) where the participants will be assigned to.
To access JSC you first need to sign up as a visitor to Forschungszentrum Jülich. We will have provided the necessary data and information to our Visitors' Reception. Please note, however, that each participant must present a valid identity card or passport to be able to enter the Forschungszentrum.
If you make use of the shuttle service, entering though the gate will be much easier and prepared for. If this is not the case and you arrive on your own, please go to the Visitors' Reception at the main gate and mention the JUQUEEN workshop and the local contact Dirk Brömmel.
Once you arrive at JSC, you can then register for the workshop.
Access to JUQUEEN
The hands-on sessions will take place in our computer labs and we encourage everyone to make use of the provided workstations. The benefit will be a more stable connection and better usability of the graphical tools we provide on JUQUEEN.
The workstations in our labs do require a separate user account and you will have received details of this account before you come to Juelich. This account will only be valid for the time of the workshop and will be deleted afterwards.
Since you will be using your project's compute time resources on JUQUEEN, please make sure that logging in to our HPC systems with your project account is possible. As you know, this requires ssh-key authentication.
You have two possibilities to achieve this:
You will have received the public key of your personal computer lab account via email. You should make this key known to JUQUEEN. In order to enable log-ins with this key, copy it to your $HOME on JUQUEEN and execute the following command:
cat ${HOME}/id.pub >> ${HOME}/.ssh/authorized_keys (Or an appropriate line if you changed the path or filename.)
As an alternative, at the expense of spreading your private data: Copy the private ssh-key you already use and that matches the public key on JUQUEEN to the computer lab account. This can be done during the workshop provided you have access to your private key (e.g. via scp or on a USB key).
Wireless access at JSC
If you wish to connect to our wireless network during the workshop, your laptop will have to be registered first. Please email us the hardware address (MAC) of your wireless network card (e.g. 01:23:45:67:89:ab). Alternatively, access can also be granted once you are here.
Accomodation
Participants are responsible for booking their own hotel accommodation. A number of rooms has been reserved in hotels in Jülich for 4-6 February 2013 . Hotel reservation has to be done before January, 25. Please be sure to mention the "JUQUEEN Workshop" when booking the accommodation.
We will provide a complementary shuttle service, which will take participants from their hotels in Jülich to the Forschungszentrum Jülich in the morning and back to their accommodation in the evening. Buses will be clearly marked. The bus schedule can be found in the agenda. If you miss the shuttle bus, you can take the regular bus line SB11 from Jülich to the Forschungszentrum at your own expence (ticket 1,60 Euro per trip).
We offer a complimentary shuttle service between the hotels in Jülich and JSC. You will find the times for the bus in the agenda. The shuttle will make two stops in the city centre, close by or at the hotels. The bus will either be run from FZ Juelich or display the destination 'Forschungszentrum'.
