Mechanical interactions in bacterial systems, in particular molecular mechanisms of force generation by bacterial motors and the role of inter-bacterial forces in biofilm structure. Role of horizontal gene transfer in bacterial adaptation. Single molecule and quantitative image analysis are combined with molecular biology and laboratory evolution techniques.
