Molecular Motors and Nanomachines

Annette M. Schmidt (Physical Chemistry)
(building 01.3, room 3001)

A fascinating paradigm in living matter is active micromachinery. To understand the underlying physical concepts and to mimic such systems by artificial design is the goal of actual research. This course will cover the following topics:

  • Physical requirements for being a machine
  • Scale considerations
  • Nanomachines from nature and from the lab
  • Mechano-chemical coupling
  • Different mechanisms of energy conversion: microscopic reversibility and the relevance of a power stroke
