Introduction to Cell Biology

Frank Müller and Arnd Baumann
Molecular and Cellular Physiology, IHRS BioSoft

IHRS BioSoft, HIDSS4Health, and BIF-IGS offer an introductory lecture series on cell biology. The series of lectures deals with four main topics and aims at an interdisciplinary audience. While "Looking through the microscope" we will study the architecture of cells and their functional compartments. We will follow "The molecules of life" on the way from DNA to proteins and learn about mechanisms of gene regulation and manipulation, heterologous expression of proteins of interest in cell systems, gene knock-out and knock-down as well as transgenic approaches. "Methods and tools in cell biology" are the prerequisites for cell culture, preparation and analysis of cell and tissue samples, staining techniques, microscopy techniques, and physiological recording and imaging techniques. "Signalling and communication" is mediated by receptors, signal transduction cascades, ion channels, second messengers, etc.

We may be able to offer demonstrations in the lab (e.g. sectioning, immunohistochemistry and confocal microscopy, patch-clamp recordings, calcium imaging).

The lecture series is open to all interested colleagues. Registration is mandatory for participation. In case of overbooking, priority will be given to fellows (members) of the three schools. If you have more than 75% attendance, you can receive a certificate of participation. For questions regarding the lecture or certificates, please contact biosoft@fz-juelich.de.
