Introduction to Machine Learning
Online using Zoom
Powered by Helmholtz AI, IHRS BioSoft, HIDSS4Health and BIF-IGS offer a basic course on machine learning. Potential applications of machine learning or deep learning in natural science are numerous, and include detector development, data analysis techniques, and even physical modeling. This highly interactive, introductory course will equip the participants with basic tools to begin implementing and using machine learning methods. It will involve some theoretical descriptions but focuses on practical examples of the relevant topics. After the course, learners are able to embark in classification as well as regression projects using “scikit-learn” or “keras”.
All interested Ph.D. students in IHRS BioSoft groups can register. In case the course should be overbooked priority will be given to fellows of the three schools.

Registration
Please register via HIFIS by December 19; registered students will be informed about acceptance before Christmas. In case you work in an IHRS BioSoft group in Aachen, Bonn, Cologne, Düsseldorf, or Jülich, please select “IHRS BioSoft” when registering. If places are short, we will distinguish between fellows (you have been admitted in an application round), collegians (if you work in an IHRS BioSoft institute but have not/not yet applied for membership), and alumni.
Previous knowledge
The English-language online course addresses novices to Machine Learning that have basic knowledge in Python on the level of the course “Python from Zero to Data Analysis”.
- In case you have participated in “Python from Zero to Data Analysis” that we offered in late November, we highly recommend that you keep practicing Python until the Machine learning course!
- In case you have not participated in “Python from Zero to Data Analysis”, the prerequisite is basic Python, Pandas, and Matplotlib. In doubt, please contact biosoft@fz-juelich.de for more detailed information.
