In the open access publication of the month for November, Simon Brauner, Amin Lahnaoui, and Wilhelm Kuckshinrichs from IEK-STE worked with Solomon Agbo (UE-B) and Stefan Böschen (HumTec RWTH) to compare the African and German attitudes towards future hydrogen exports from Africa to Germany and Western Europe.

Africa has the natural resources needed to produce hydrogen and a large technical potential for renewable energy – both essential prerequisites for exporting green hydrogen in the future. The actual export potential, however, can only be determined by taking into account country-specific sociotechnical conditions and strategies. The methodological basis of the study is a survey of the partners involved in the H2Atlas project in Southern and West African countries. The authors used a semiquantitive analysis to determine visions and expectations on the export of green hydrogen in the context of the African energy supply. The assessment aimed to identify differences in hydrogen visions that could lead to conflict and similarities that could be the basis for cooperation and create win-win solutions.
H2ATLAS-AFRICA

Although a need for an immediate transition to renewable energy is seen, as is the importance of green hydrogen, the results show that many African partners are not envisioning the immediate export of green hydrogen. The African partners are primarily concerned with improving the continent’s still deficient energy access for both the population and industry. Nevertheless, there is an emphasis on cross-border and cross-continent cooperation in order to realize shared visions.

The open access publication “Towards green hydrogen? – A comparison of German and African visions and expectations in the context of the H2Atlas-Africa project” was published in the journal Energy strategy reviews.
